Most camps featured a wider array of competitive sporting activity than the Moscow Olympics. But the supremely gifted or sports obsessed, upped the ante, going to specialist sports camps run by former pro-athletes known for their good looks, like Rick Cerone, the Italian Stallion or hall of fame coaches, like John Wooden, who used summer camp to express their softer side and give out hugs. Chris Isenberg of No Mas spent some of the finest days of his youth trotting round the diamond at Lee Mazilli’s baseball camp. Isenberg writes “That’s me next to ex-Yankee catcher Rick Cerone, the Italian Stallion, on the far right with the Expos hat. Note other coaches nut sack.”
If you spent the summer trotting round the baseball diamond, basketball court, or tennis clay with a legend of a half-star, we would love to see your photos and hear your stories. Be in touch.
